New Styling, Safety and Sound System Surround the Driver in the 2016 Scion FR-S
Sleek FR-S Sports Coupe, Delivers a Unique Combination of Performance, Value and Premium Touches
September 08, 2015
Scion FR-S drivers will have more stimulation for their senses with the 2016 model. With a new premium feel featuring bright silver interior accents, two fresh exterior colors, a new standard audio system and an integrated rearview backup camera, the FR-S adds more style and safety to its solid enthusiast credentials.
Balanced and Pure Driving
The 2016 Scion FR-S uses a 2.0-liter, flat boxer engine in a front-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration that delivers an impressive 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. With its low center of gravity and lightweight body, the FR-S earns its reputation for great handling. The vehicle dynamics are enhanced with last year’s addition of a more rigid front suspension and re-tuning of the rear shock absorbers. The improved damping results in less body roll and a more communicative driving experience.
Drivers choose between a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters and Dynamic Rev Management® technology. Both models benefit from a standard Torsen® limited-slip differential that helps maximize traction by allocating power to the rear wheel with the most traction. It also contributes to nimble cornering performance.
A streamlined shark-fin antenna provides superior aerodynamics. The smooth shape of the FR-S enhances the track-ready design, balanced drive and exceptional fuel economy for its class. The 2016 FR-S has an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 25 mpg city and 34 mpg highway with the automatic transmission and 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway with the manual transmission.
Fierce Exterior Looks
The rich heritage behind the FR-S inspires every angle of its high-octane styling. The
FR-S exhaust tips sit flush with the rear bumper, complementing the low, wide rear fascia that features aerodynamic lower treatments and sharply angled lights. These rear details of the FR-S contribute to the overall aerodynamic shape and well-built design that drivers love. Approach the vehicle from the front and find a menacing look with a low stance, aggressive front bumper and angular headlights with projector-beam halogen lamps.
The FR-S is available in seven colors including Raven, Asphalt, Hot Lava, Steel and Halo (a pearl white paint, for an additional $395 fee). For 2016, the FR-S also comes in Ablaze red and Oceanic blue.
Inside the FR-S, the experience remains all about the driver. Interior door panel material boasts a carbon fiber look and feel, complementing already aggressive styling. The large center-mounted tachometer commands the driver’s attention while speed is easily monitored with both digital and analog gauges.
Drivers will enjoy low-mounted, deep front seats and a sporty leather-trimmed steering wheel. The 2+2 seating configuration allows the rear seats to fold down flat for functional space. Sporty refinements throughout the vehicle include aluminum sport pedals and scuff plates, a leather-wrapped shift knob and accent stitching.
The Sound of Style
The 2016 FR-S receives a new standard audio system, featuring high quality sound and audio technology designed to enhance every driving experience. A new, large 7-inch touch screen display and voice recognition technology lend a completely new look and feel. The features Scion drivers expect are present: Bluetooth® hands-free and audio streaming connectivity, HD RadioTM and USB connectivity. It’s simple to reference song titles, album name and artist name right on the head unit.
The eight-speaker sound package features a Pioneer audio system and features mid-range and woofer speakers. The Pioneer AM/FM head unit powers the tweeters, mid-range and full-range speakers, while a separate two-channel amplifier is designed to drive power to the door-mounted woofers.
Additional on-the-go connectivity and on-board navigation is available with the optional BeSpoke Audio system. Push-to-talk voice navigation and geo-located points of interest add convenience to any drive. Aha™, available on iTunes® and Google Play®, provides access to 100,000 free audio stations, including Scion’s own seven signature music channels. Drivers also can find local restaurants, coffee, hotels, and weather updates through location-based services like Yelp and TripAdvisor, along with popular social media applications, sports, news and entertainment.
The new for 2016 system also has voice training (on non-navigation units only), a quick POI Search feature, which allows the driver to quickly find the nearest gas, bank, etc. (with navigation only), and a phonebook that holds up to 2,500 contacts with four numbers each.
Standard Safety Features
All 2016 FR-S vehicles come standard with six airbags, including driver and front passenger dual-stage advanced airbags, driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags, and front and rear passenger side curtain airbags.
The 2016 FR-S comes standard with the STAR Safety SystemTM which features an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Traction Control (TRAC), Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Smart Stop Technology (SST).
For added safety, comfort and convenience, a rear-view backup camera has been integrated into the 2016 FR-S.
The 2016 Scion FR-S continues to thrill true driving enthusiasts with its affordable price tag and engaging design. The 2016 Scion FR-S has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $25,305 with a six-speed manual transmission or $26,405 with a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and Dynamic Rev Management® technology. The delivery, processing and handling (DPH) fee for all Scion models is $795 and is not included in the MSRP.
Like all Scion models, the FR-S is covered by a three-year/36,000-mile limited warranty and five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. It also comes with Scion Service Boost, a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first, and two years of 24-hour roadside assistance.
Scion continues to be the test laboratory division for Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. From its start in 2003, Scion’s goal was to offer products and processes that stand apart from the crowd.
