Gary Smith serves as the vice president of customer quality services (CQS) in North America for Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), USA, Inc. Smith oversees the quality assurance operations for Lexus, Toyota and Scion products in North America and all countries where North American products are exported. He is responsible for monitoring Toyota products in the stream of commerce, identifying product concerns, defining root causes, pursuing production changes and providing dealerships with field fix processes.
Prior to his current role, Smith was the corporate manager for product quality and service support. His other roles at TMS included national manager of service technology, manager of service technology and assistant manager of tools and equipment. His first position at TMS in 1990 was in curriculum development.
Smith started his career in the industry working for other auto automakers. He served as the program developer and resident technical instructor for General Motors. He was also the area service manager, fixed operations manager and assistant service manager for Chevrolet.
Smith is an Automotive Service Excellence Certified Master Technician and a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers. He studied automotive technology at Northeast Kansas Community College and automotive engineering technology at Weber State College.
