Mike Sweers is the Chief Engineer for the Toyota Tundra and Tacoma vehicle programs and the Vice President of Engineering Design – Interior at Toyota Technical Center (TTC), located in Ann Arbor, Mich. TTC is Toyota’s North American R&D center and is a division of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing, North America, Inc. (TEMA).
Sweers joined TTC as a senior engineer in the Interior Design and Liaison department. A year later, he became a principal engineer, with a focus primarily on seat and seatbelt design. Sweers then served as Manager, where he was responsible for the design of interior trim, primarily for North American-built vehicles, and for liaison with the corresponding suppliers and plants. In 1999, Sweers was promoted to General Manager of Engineering Design 6 (interior design). In this role, he was responsible for supervising the development of interior systems. In 2003, he served as General Manager of Engineering Design 5. He also oversaw plant and field liaison activity. In January 2010, Sweers was promoted to Vice President of Engineering Design – Interior. In July 2010, he became Chief Engineer for the Toyota Tundra. In April 2012, Sweers became Chief Engineer for the Toyota Tacoma.
Prior to joining TTC, Sweers served as a project engineer with Chrysler Corporation from 1986-1990 and started his career at General Motors Oldsmobile Division, later becoming BOC J/N Platform.
Sweers earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Detroit. He followed this with a specialty in Quality Control Management, for which he graduated magna cum laude, with an Associates of Applied Science from Lansing Community College. He has received U.S. patents for automotive seating and interior trim components. He is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and is a senior member of the Society of Plastics Engineers.
